Guild of Scriveners of York – Quiz

Past Master Peter Gravestock and Court Assistant Ian Somerville travelled to York on 6th February to represent Tax Advisers at the annual Guild of Scriveners charity quiz night. As other Tax Advisers were unable to travel to York because of flu, Ian's wife, Mary, and local taxman, John Beeley, stepped up to complete the "Over Taxed" team. After a hard fought contest which included questions on Kings of England, celebrity photos, nursery rhymes and shops in York and a welcome break for pie, chips and mushy peas washed down with Yorkshire bitter, team "Over Taxed" finished in joint second place. The Worshipful Company of Carmen

On Wednesday 25 January, the Master was a guest of the Master Carmen, Marsha Rae Ratcliff  at their Charity lunch.

The lunch was held in the magnificent Goldsmiths' Hall located in Foster Lane where almost 200 Carmen and their guests attended. The proceeds from the day went to the Master's chosen charity The Alzheimers Society. …read more

The Worshipful Company of Tobacco Pipe Makers and Tobacco Blenders

On Tuesday 24 January 2017, the Master was a guest of the Master of the Worshipful Company of Tobacco Pipe Makers and Tobacco Blenders, Charles Miller. The company hosted their January Dinner in the splendid surroundings of Drapers’ Hall. The dinner included a unique event to their company  - The Smoking Cap Ceremony. The ceremony takes place immediately after the Loyal Toast where the Clerk presents the traditional Smoking Cap to the Master, who dons it and bows to the assembled company. This ceremony, which formerly signified that smoking was permitted, is carried out in silence. The Worshipful Company of Coopers

On Thursday 19 January 2017, the Master attended a dinner as guest of the Master Cooper, Alderman Ian Luder, former Lord Mayor and Past Master Tax Adviser. Coopers Hall is a Pre-Georgian Town House in the heart of the City of London built on land that once formed part of the gardens of Devonshire House. The Worshipful Company of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales

On Tuesday 17 January, the Master attended a dinner as guest of the Master Chartered Accountant and Chartered Accountants Hall. The dinner was a lovely occasion held in the old Council Chamber of the Institute and attended by Masters of other companies who themselves are Chartered Accountants. The guest speaker was Sheriff Peter Estlin, himself a Chartered Accountant, who, rather than deliver a speech held a Question and Answers session. …read more
