Masters Weekend

Over the weekend of 22 and 23 July, the Master entertained 50 company members and guests to his home town of Southend-on-Sea.

The day started well with bright sunshine to accompany the members setting off from Leigh-on-Sea station for a tour of the town in a vintage Routemaster bus. We toured the seafront areas and enjoyed the views across the estuary. Our first stop was Southend Pier, the longest pleasure pier in the world at 1 ¼ miles long. Here we were greeted by the Southend Town Crier before a tour of the Pier Museum and a train ride to the end of the pier. The weekend had been planned to coincide with a high tide making the pier trip the more enjoyable and, given the wonderful weather, some decided to walk back to shore rather than let the train take the strain..

We then took a short bus ride to 16th Century Porters, the official residence of the Mayor of Southend, for a Civic Reception, lunch and tours of the building. We were formally greeted by the Mayor, Councillor Fay Evans, and her Beadle. The Master replied with a thank you for their kind hospitality and presented the Mayor with a donation to her Mayor’s Appeal. Lunch included Rossi’s local ice cream in specially commissioned Tax Adviser tubs.

Next we headed to Leigh–on-Sea for a tour of the old town. As we travelled to Leigh, we could see the rain clouds gathering over the Estuary and sure enjoy we were treated to a short torrential downpour just as our tour started. However we were blessed with a fantastic tour guide, Councillor Georgina Phillips who would not be beaten and told us of stories of fishermen, pirate, smugglers and customs men whilst walking through the streets.

In the evening we dined at the Pipe of Port, a local Wine Bar and Brasserie before retiring for the night.

The following day we met for a short 3 ½ mile stroll along the seafront to The Boatyard restaurant for Sunday Lunch.

A great time was had by all!
