Vintners and Song

The Master and Clerk were recent guests of the Worshipful Company of Vintners at their junior Livery Dinner. The Vintners are one of two Livery Companies still involved with Swan Upping, and although no actual swan was served, we did consume butter and chocolates in the shape of swans. Excellent wines from the Vintners' own cellar were served.

The Crown enjoys ownership of all unmarked mute swans in open water and can grant those rights to others. The only two bodies still  exercising those granted rights are the Worshipful Company of Vintners and the Worshipful Company of Dyers. The ownership of swans in the Thames is thus shared equally among the Crown, the Vintners and the Dyers. No swan is eaten these days, so the Livery takes part in an annual census of swans for conservation purposes.

One notable features of the Vintners' Company is its song, which is sung at Livery dinners. See and hear:

The Tax Advisers are lacking a song at present, so if you think you could compose a song for the Tax Advisers, the Master would love to hear from you!!
