Worshipful Company of Distillers

On Tuesday 16 May, the Master and Clerk attended the sixth annual Distillers’ City Debate at Bank of America Merrill Lynch.

The 2017 debate posed the question: Is innovation a more effective tool for growth than acquisition in the spirits industry?

The debate was introduced by Richard Watling, Master of The Worshipful Company of Distillers and was chaired by Ian Buxton, liveryman, commentator, and author of the 101 Whiskies & Gins series.

Around 200 guests attended from the spirits industry, analysts, City, media, Distillers’ Livery and Masters of other Livery Companies.

Prior to the vote the view from the floor was that innovation was the more effective tool however this changed during the course of the debate to finish with the acquisition team coming out on top.

After the vote, those present continued discussions and tasted spirits from the Distillers’ Bar.
